Singapore navy rescues crew of capsized Malaysian-registered trawler

SINGAPORE: A Malaysian-registered fishing trawler capsized in Singapore waters on Tuesday morning (Sep 22), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a news release.

MPA received the report at about 9.40am that the trawler had capsized 7 nautical miles north-east of Pedra Branca.

All five crew members on board were rescued by the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) patrol vessel, RSS Independence. Two of them had minor injuries and were given medical attention by RSN crew. They reached Singapore safely, MPA said.

Singapore authorities are currently verifying the nationalities of the rescued crew members.

MPA also said it has deployed three vessels to conduct salvage operations in Singapore waters and to ensure navigational safety. Ships have been warned via navigational broadcasts to stay clear of the incident area. (CNA/xk)
