KOTA KINABALU: The Royal Malaysian Navy will hold an Open Day at the Sepanggar Naval Base from April 25 to April 26 in conjunction with its 81st anniversary.
Visitors can get on board the navy vessels and visit various exhibition booths during the two-day event, which is expected to be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman.
Recently on 14 April, the Royal Malaysian Navy in Sepanggar conducted an exercise, “Borneo War”, which enabled members of the press corp to experience being in a navy ship in case of a war.
It involved six naval ships that included KD Selangor and KD Perak as well as two helicopters and a combat jet that took the role of the enemy. One of the helicopters was from the Royal Malaysian Air Force.
A total of 402 officers and personnel of the navy were involved with 17 evaluators and 16 from the volunteer reserve.
Departing from the Sepanggar Naval Base at 5.30am, the ship sailed as far as 130 nautical miles towards the Island of Mengalum.
It started with a [clearing a] free passage [from] landmines followed by a tactical manoeuvre. Next, the vessel came into [Action] Station to face the threat of air strikes from a Hawk aircraft that served as the enemy.
This was then followed by surface firing and practice drills like Leakage Prevention and Fire Fighting and control failure.
Super Lynx helicopters acted as snipers in providing protection.
Later at a press conference, Chief of Naval Region 2, Rear Admiral Dato Pahlawan Mohammad Rosland Omar said the navy is ever ready to face any threat and the possibility of war.
“The Borneo War Series 2/2015 has shown that our navy is committed to upholding the sovereignty of our country,” he said.
Also present at the press conference, Commander M.Saravan A / L Muthusamy (Chairman of the Task Force RMN) and Commanding Officer Commander of KD Perak Noor Azizi Abdullah.
