Saab Indonesia's Scholarship Has Taken Off

April 27 -- Ten naval officers from the Indonesian Navy were in Sweden this month for a Saab training scholarship program. The officers were undergoing training in Swedish innovation systems and developing capabilities for maritime security in littoral environments. The program is an outcome of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Indonesian Navy signed in February 2015 at the Surabaya Naval base.

The study in Sweden commenced on April 13, 2015. A two-day introductory workshop and follow-up web seminar will also be hosted at Indonesia’s School for Naval Technology (STTAL) Jakarta, in May this year. One such seminar has already been held in March.

As Swedish industry and Swedish universities further the exchange of innovation and technology with Indonesia, Saab has started this broader scholarship initiative to provide Master’s level education to Indonesian graduates. Saab, in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology, the Royal Institute of Technology and Linköping University, is offering Master Studies and Internship programmes in Sweden for young Indonesian professionals. This also goes hand in hand with Saab’s effort to transfer technology in areas of strategic interest for both Indonesia and Sweden.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the Indonesian Navy to come to Sweden and learn more about the capabilities needed to operate in littoral environments. Indonesia is similar to Sweden both geographically and environmentally, with thousands of islands and shallow waters. At the same time, it’s a great opportunity for Saab to demonstrate our Naval Combat systems since our products and solutions are designed for the littorals. I hope this can be an annual event for Indonesian Navy supported by Saab,” says Peter Carlqvist, Head of Saab Indonesia.

A total of up to 50 scholars will be invited over the coming years. The focus is on young professionals who possess a bachelor’s degree in engineering or an equivalent level of education. The Master Studies include course tuition and internships conducted in Sweden. An industry mentor will be provided and the internship will be executed together with relevant organizations.
